We’ve all heard that meditation and living mindfully is great for us but where are we going to find time to sit still and smell the proverbial roses?

Also, aren’t all meditations the same? Breathe in, breathe out.

Why do we have to pay so much for an app that  tells us to do nothing?!

Getting users hooked onto wellness is no mean feat.

Diagram showing 10 outlines of human icons with 9 icons filled in white and 1 icon filled in black, with right foot filled in white.

92% of new users leave Headspace every month.

That’s 9 out of 10 people leaving, with the last person having one foot out the door!

We did our own research and found 3 main reasons users were leaving the app.

New users were not seeing enough value to purchase a subscription.

A illustrated diagram showing: Reason 1 - blue ball with sad face and caption "Not enough content." Reason 2 - yellow ball with anxious face and caption "Price was not right." Reason 3 - green ball with indifferent face and caption "Content did not suit."

Spoiler alert: 3 out of 4 users felt that the new features were ‘valuable’ and ‘worth paying for.’

Winning hearts and minds in 4 steps.

Step 1: Creating that spark.

Headspace will now remind users to check in with the app whenever they wake up, take a mid-day break or when it is close to bedtime.

Sync up your calendar and it will even calculate the number of mini-breaks you should take through the day and send you reminders then.

Step 2: Less is more. Making things easy.

We made it easier to discover content suited to one’s moods at any given moment. No more analysis-paralysis.

Activities and meditations will now slide into one’s schedule with minimal disruptions and they can be done quickly on the go.

Step 3: Rewards & Awards.

Everyone loves a big shiny trophy. Everyone is looking for that extra something-something after putting in a bit of work. We focused on two such Rewards - Rewards of the Hunt and Rewards of the Self.

Here’s a gold star for taking that break! Well done gaining mastery over your emotions!  Good job, you! You’re rocking self-care!

Step 4: Headspace is Your Space.

This is the whole point of the new Check-In feature: tell us how you feel, if you’re tired and what’s happening in your day and like a wise old friend, Headspace would know exactly what to say to put you at ease.

It will brings up content tailored to your unique circumstances.

Getting you ready at anytime of day.

Headspace can consolidate your calendar events, tell you how your day might be shaping up and support you any time of day with relevant meditations and activities.

Focus on the present.

Day Planner helps you identify any free time throughout your day and encourages you to take a breather.  Taking regular mini-breaks and checking in with Headspace are very good things.

How do you really feel?

Each step of the check-in can be just as meditative as the meditations themselves. How often have you had the chance to sit with yourself and have that conversation?

How are you really feeling right now?

A time for reflection & gratitude.

Dig a little deeper. Be aware of and learn from your own thoughts and emotions. This also helps Headspace tune its recommendations, giving you the most relevant content to boost your moods or ease your mind.

Did you sleep well last night?

Better than a cup of coffee, a quick meditation or gentle movements could keep you focused without the caffeine jitters or calm your mind down just before bed.

We’re here if you need us.

Unless you actually need some time alone. Choose from guided, semi-guided and unguided meditations.

Just what you need.

Headspace listens and empathizes with your moods, the events of your day and even your energy levels to gently suggest relevant activities to help you create your own calm.

There’s also an option to re-roll the dice by shaking your phone to quickly get a new set of recommendations.

Take these good vibes with you.

Badges are proof you’re doing the work and have shown up for yourself. Well done!

Completing activities within the app also trigger variable events; changing the background ever so slightly to celebrate your achievements.

It’s the little things in life that give the most delight.

Future Pacing: Sensory Activities

More than just sitting still and meditating passively, users during the tests were also asking for more sensory activities such as the use of doodling to express their moods or how wired they were feeling.

Some even wanted the ability to construct an “emotional landscape” or a chance to “express themselves creatively” within the app.

CBT-based approaches involving tapping could also be incorporated. These would require further study and collaboration with experts in the field. This would also mean a thorough re-thinking of Headspace’s primary content.

Future Pacing: Internet of Things

Expanding on the existing functions of Headspace across various devices could really drive user investment in the app.

Imagining being able to track your heart rate and having synced your calendar with Headspace, the app is able to differentiate between an upcoming panic attack and a work out session before jumping in to calm you down with a quick breathing exercise.

How about having Headspace sync your Day Planner and Check-In across all devices and being supported by content relevant to your immediate circumstances all day?

Leveraging on the power of the crowd and the local community, we can build a strong community of users whilst keeping running and carbon costs low.

Service quality wouldn’t even need to take a hit with a bit of creativity and the right business know-how.

Facing a mountain of challenges.

Diagram showing a box of vegetables labeled 'Limited range of products', a man on a scooter making a delivery labelled 'Scalability of logistics' and a group of people labelled 'Expanding customer base'.

Fierce competition from large retailers combined with an extremely limited range of products and the lack of logistics meant that Mushroom Buddies were struggling to expand their customer base.
